If you think you may struggle to pay you heating bills this winter, here are three schemes that may help, as suggested by family groups across Wales…
The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-off reduction of £140 on your electricity bill. Although it’s mainly for people receiving a pension, if you are on a low-income or get certain means-tested benefits you can apply directly to a supplier for a discount. A list of suppliers taking part are on this page. You must apply by 29th January 2016.
Nest is a Welsh Government scheme to make your home warmer and more energy-efficient, which will bring down your bill. They can offer free home improvements if someone who lives there receives a means-tested benefit and the home is hard to heat. To find out if you qualify head to nestwales.org.uk.
3. Cyd Cymru
Cyd Cymru works by doing collective energy purchasing. Collective purchasing is where a group of people get a bigger discount on their energy bills than if they switched suppliers separately. Government backed schemes have been set up to make this process easier and the main one in Wales is Cyd Cymru. Click here if you want more info on how it works.
These are just three of many possible ways to reduce your bills, for others check MoneySavingExpert, who have lots of tips and advice on keeping your bills down and see if you eligible for an ECO Boiler Grant. Also check with your supplier (or one that you are thinking of changing to) to see if they have any schemes running.
