Dan is a dad from Wrexham. He’s having trouble with getting his son to keep his seat belt on, and he’s concerned about his safety. He’s asked A Problem Shared… for advice.
My son has just learned how to undo his seat belt and keeps undoing it while I’m driving and getting out of his car seat, which is terrifying!
I tell him off but he still does it. I’m really afraid of him getting hurt, especially if I had to brake suddenly.
Can anyone help? Is there some sort of ‘seat belt lock’ I can buy?
Our FamilyPoint advice to Dan
Thank you for contacting FamilyPoint Cymru.
This sounds like a tricky situation and also very worrying for you.
There is a lot of information and advice out there on what to do if a child undoes their seat belt in the car. Some companies sell devices to help children stop undoing seat belts, however, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (as mentioned on the government website www.gov.uk) “does not recommend any device which affects the working of a seat belt, a harness or a buckle. It may reduce the effectiveness of the seat belt or harness in an accident (causing more injuries to the child), and could also be difficult to undo in an emergency”.
They then provide points that may help to stop your child undoing their seatbelt here.
The AA also have some tips here, which you may find useful.
