Have A Safe Bonfire Night

Health Things To Do | by | 4th Nov 2015

Thursday 5th November 2015 is that magical night of the year when we go ooooh and aaaaah while staring at the sky, that’s right it’s Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night if you prefer.

Whether you’re heading to your local park, which is recommended as the safest option, or setting up your own display, it can be a dangerous evening with lots of things that can go bang, catch fire or just go wrong.

There’s plenty of advice out there to keep you and your family safe and we thought we’d see what the three Welsh Fire Services are sharing this year.

North Wales Fire & Rescue Service (NWFRS which covers Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd and Wrexham) has this excellent section that covers all the bases from bonfires to bangers. Did you know that you shouldn’t give a sparkler to someone under five and that sparklers can get five times hotter than cooking oil? You do now! There’s also a handy poster to help you share some knowledge.

NWFRS also just posted this top video about the consequences of teenagers messing around with fire and booze, well worth sharing with any young people you know.

South Wales Fire & Rescue Service (SWFRS which covers Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan) also has plenty of good information on their site and they’ve even got an app.

Did you know that if you’re found guilty of hoax calling them it’s a £5000 fine or six months in prison?

Over £10,000 worth of illegal fireworks were seized by SWFRS last year so they made this great little video about why you shouldn’t buy dodgy fireworks.

Last but not least Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Swansea) are also pushing the message that the safest way to spend Bonfire Night is at an organised event and have a list of them here and have this fireworks video.

So there we have it, tips, tricks and advice from all three Welsh Fire Services to help you and your family have a fun and safe time. Take care and enjoy your Bonfire Night and please share any cool pictures with us on our Instagram (@FPTcymru), Twitter (@FPTcymru) or Facebook.
